Work visa in Portugal: Documentation Required

In Portugal there are four types of visas that can be obtained by non-Portuguese citizens wishing to live in Portugal:

  1. Student visa
  2. Work visas
  3. Golden visa
  4. retired persons visa

Here we are concerned with the second on this list i.e. a work visa in Portugal, where a person wishes to live and work in Portugal, not being a Portuguese citizen. The relevant law that describes the documentation required to make a successful application for a work visa in Portugal is contained in Articles 88 and 89 of the Aliens Act. The documentation required is as follows:

  • Passport or other valid travel document;
  • Valid residence visa;
  • Proof of means of subsistence, as provided for in Ordinance no. 1563/2007 of 11/12 – receipts for the last 3 months (at least 676,67 euros per month);
  • Proof that you have accommodation;
  • Authorization to consult the applicant’s criminal record;
  • Employment contract under the law;
  • Document with information necessary to verify registration with the tax administration;
  • Document with information necessary for verification of required contributions to the social security system;
  • Employment contract or open independent activity;

This process takes around 6 months.

NIF Application

Available in the following locations: Aveiro, Castelo Branco, Faro, Lisbon, Portimão, Porto.

* If your local town is not listed, a lawyer from our nearest office will be happy to assist you.

1Who is this service for?

Anyone wishing to carry-out certain transacions in Portugal - will need to obtain a NIF number. A wide-range of every-day activities in Portugal require the NIF, for example, to open a bank account, rent a property, buy a property, arrange utilities etc.

The NIF number should not be confused with residency which is a legal (and fiscal) distinction about where you live or where you are fiscally based. Anyone who is legally resident will also have a NIF number, but that doesn't mean that anyone with a NIF number is resident in Portugal.

There are a number of pre-conditions that determine which type of NIF you apply for and our local experts will ensure that these are complied with so that you follow the appropriate application process.

Advocate Abroad's local lawyers will manage this process for you from beginning to end:
